Welcome to my lifestyle. The word GEEK started before I stepped in the gym; I used to play professionally online with a game called Dota 2 (and yes, I got paid to play).
My first exposure to the fitness industry was competing at my first ever show in early 2016. After winning my class and doing pretty well for someone who self-coached himself into a physique show, I thought I knew everything there is to know about competitions. I lost 30 pounds in the process and took time to learn everything bodybuilding had to offer. From the book Fundamentals of Resistance Training and Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding to Layne Nortons Peak Plan and bodybuilding.com forums, I thought this was it. But boy, was I wrong? That same year, fellow gym members looked to me for advice and training to help them achieve their goals when I realized right then that the methods that worked for me didn't necessarily work for any of my clients, and I realized that I barely scratched the surface of this industry. Thus began my journey of coaching.
In the beginning of 2017, as I started training clients for free, I also got certified in NASM personal training on top of my Bachelor's in Nursing degree that I already had when I was playing video games. And for a full year, I went from training clients for free to having a full schedule, working as a nurse, and being a personal trainer on top of that. I worked 60 hours a week, only to go home to go to bed and start my day all over again the next day. This time of my life tested me and really showed me what I was capable of.
This period of my life proved to me that the more effort you put invest, the more you will gain.
Fast forward to 2020: 10,000 hours of in-person training, 4 years of learning, 4 years of grinding, and 4 years of experience later, my client demographic evolved from a general lifestyle to transformations, then to physique competitions.
A certain type of clientele started to grow. We started winning shows, winning overalls, and getting procards. For me to realize this is what I had passion for. The more physiques I changed, the more results I produced, and then I realized, Hey, I'm pretty good at this thing.
This lit a fire in me, and the dedication I put into each and every athlete I’ve ever had in coaching is what makes me who I am today.
But the education never stopped. I got four more certifications through NASM in weight loss and nutrition, was mentored by several coaches like Greg Hasberry and Cameron Cheek, finished the J3U courses, and am now focusing on the business at a full 100%.
Just like that, what began as endless days and nights of work, I now hold records as a coach and have proven myself to really make an impact in this industry.
And this is just the beginning.
